on film: clueless

oh my goodness, this movie is ridiculous. and in saying that, i’m giving one of my biggest compliments. words cannot even describe the love that i feel for it. whilst the ensembles of both cher and dionne probably garner the most attention, i think it’s characters like travis who are even more representative of this time. of course i was just a baby when this movie was released but i still fell a connection to all of the plaid, flannel, and knee socks. even if the movie gets a little weird toward the end (see falling in love with your stepbrother) you can’t deny that it’s got immense influence in american popular culture.

on film: capote

i love this movie. really, i do. i picked up in cold blood on a whim and instantly fell in love. the film illustrates capote’s trying experience while investigating the clutter murders in kansas. as you can probably glean from this post, i was quite taken with the costuming, more specifically, the glasses. the story begins in 1959 and depicts possibly my favorite style of dressing, see intelligentsia meets old school literati. it was a pretty great moment for style, no?

on film: pretty in pink

sometimes i think that being a teenager in the 1980s would have been fun, especially if my experience resembled a john hughes film. everyone was insanely well-dressed and had a lot of attitude, all of which was accompanied by a punky pop soundtrack–i’ll take it! the 80s seem to have a dramatic sensibility that other generations didn’t possess and i think it could have been fun to be a part of this. and do you know what i would have done to have a friend like duckie? despite the stalking via bicycle, of course.
